Social Enterprise + Chocolate Factory = East Van Roasters

An unassuming sandwich board peaks out past the edge of Vancouver’s Pigeon Park. At a glance, it appears to be an ordinary coffee shop. However, East Van Roasters is one of the most groundbreaking businesses to hit the streets of Vancouver BC.

In addition to being Vancouver’s first bean to bar chocolate factory, East Van Roasters is providing training and creating jobs for women residents of the Rainier Hotel in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.

Inside the cafe, the space is divided into a coffee shop and a chocolate factory. The bright space is both fresh and cozy. All sorts of folks huddle over indulgent hot beverages and nibble on chocolate delectables, all made straight from the bean.

When the cacao is harvested, it is shipped to Vancouver in its raw form and thoughtfully roasted in house to bring out the best qualities of the cacao beans. After the beans are roasted, the shells are removed by the residents of the upstairs social housing. The cacao is then made into chocolate and proceeds forward into exciting new products, recipes and gifts.

In addition to being featured in Saul Good gifts, the exquisite chocolate of East Van Roasters is being coveted by local chefs, who are designing recipes according each flavour profile of these unique single origin chocolates.
